Compliant Iris

The compliant iris was a one-piece design. By rotating one ring with respect to the other, the center radius would increase or decrease. With this iris, I was admitted into ME551. ME551 had been closed for since 2008. It was the only mechanism design course in UMich.

Fused Filament Fabrication 3D printer was provided by UMich Prof. Peter Washabuagh.

The mechanism was studied from FlexSys. Their mechanism had much larger range of motion and avoided stress concentration. Moreover, they seemed to have figured out a way to fabricate their mechanism with injection molds, enabling mass production.
